Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2024 – spectacular event in the world of interior design

Every year, we eagerly anticipate one of the most significant events in the world of design – the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. It's a week of fashion and taste where new design masterpieces are unveiled to the world, and the most talented artists exchange experiences.

This year, the event took place from April 16 to 21 at the Rho Fiera Milano exhibition complex. Established in 1961, the exhibition has since been a trendsetter in functionality, technology, and innovation for home interiors. The Salone Internazionale del Mobile is a convergence of design boundaries, a meeting place for experience and new possibilities.

The exhibition featured leaders and emerging names from the global furniture industry, showcasing the latest fashion trends in interior design. Hundreds of exhibits were presented, ranging from home textiles to tableware. Of course, our focus was primarily on furniture innovations, so in this article, we would like to delve more deeply into them with you.

The "On the Rocks" stools by Bottega Veneta have been a true sensation for the fashion house in the realm of furniture design. Designers created an installation using drawers and stools "On the Rocks," which reimagines the iconic LC14 Tabouret. The base of the stool is a classic whisky box made from Bottega's signature woven Intreccio leather in vibrant brand colors – green, blue, red, and yellow.

Furniture and decor adorned the Gucci house exhibition, under the direction of designer Sabato de Sarno. The color of the season became Ancora Red – Gucci's signature berry-red hue. Five leading Italian designers worked on the collection, which was showcased at the boutique on Via Montenapoleone.

The fashion house MCM embraced the Bauhaus style with their collection "Wearable Casa". The collection, consisting of seven modular furniture pieces, was developed by the design studio Atelier Biagetti.

Individual furniture designers also showcased their exceptional talent at the exhibition. For instance, one standout piece that caught our attention was the Arnold double side table designed by Antonio Citterio.

Another interesting piece is the Aperitivo table by Italian designer Simone Cagnazzo, which resembles a dinner plate. The legs are made of stainless steel, and the tabletop is crafted from glazed ceramic. The concept of the table pays homage to the Italian culture of aperitivo.

Tables are intriguing and unique interior pieces, which is why designers enjoy experimenting with their shapes and concepts. Another variation on this theme is the Lakelet nesting tables, designed by the Swedish studio Front Design. The color palette reflects nature reflected in water, and the variety of shapes represents a combination of natural forms over time and space. These tables can be used individually or as a cohesive set, offering versatility and aesthetic appeal to any space.

We were drawn to the Crudelia armchair by the Italian factory Paolo Castelli, which features a provocative throne-like form. It's intriguing to consider how comfortable this form is for seating in today's context. The legs are made of ash wood and adorned with brass inserts featuring laser engraving.

Popular at this year's Italian fashion week were sofas and sofa compositions. We highlighted the white ASIA sofa set by Piero Lissoni – one-, two- and three-seater sofas with soft forms on a sleek metal frame. Also catching our attention was the grand Hiroshima sofa by Naoto Fukasawa, an upgrade of an already well-known model. Another standout piece was the Pillo sofa by Willow Perron, featuring a construction without traditional legs, consisting solely of soft cushions.

Two intriguing and completely different chairs in terms of form and content particularly impressed enthusiasts of original furniture. These were the Squash by Fay Tugud and the Cornaro by Carlo Scarpa. Squash was inspired by forms from the end of the last century, featuring a rigid frame and leather upholstery. Cornaro is a reincarnation of the iconic chair from 1973, characterized by the contrast between its geometric base and soft seat.

The Lokum coffee tables, resembling amber droplets, captivated everyone at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile. Designed by Sabine Marcelis, they are entirely made of blown glass. Despite their outward simplicity, they involve a rather complex manufacturing process.

A collection of intriguing bedside tables was expanded with the addition of Echo by Fiam Italia. Echo combines wood and blown glass with an exquisite volumetric pattern.

We were impressed by the original Claudine chair from Meridiani in a cool white color. Designers placed it on two supports – a solid backrest and a slender leg. Material variations range from fabric to wood.

Ukrainian brands were also represented at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2024. For the second year in a row, our compatriots have been showcasing furniture, lighting, and home decor items at the Italian Furniture Week. This year, brands such as NOOM, DONNA, WOO, llab.design, Tivoli, Mebus, oitoproducts, diza, shishkaproject, and GARDI participated from the Ukrainian design community. Each brand presented meticulously crafted styles, distinctive expressions, and interesting themes.

Participation in such a large-scale exhibition is another significant statement by Ukrainian design on the world stage, highlighting the influence of Ukrainian designers and their openness to international partnerships. The exhibition was supported by the organizers of Salone del Mobile and the Embassy of Ukraine in Italy.

Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2024 presented many more impressive exhibits this year. We always look at them with interest and are inspired by novelties in our work. Which piece of furniture impressed you the most?
